The ongoing political and social transformations in the Arab Middle East create a new jeopolitical reality for power centers of the world such as US, China, Russia and Europe. Since Europe is geographically the closest conintienent to North African and Middle Eastern (MENA) Muslim states and politically and economically for long have strong relations with the region, new developments now create many challanges and opprtunities for Europe. The Institute of Strategic Thinking (IST) will host a roundtable discussion by bringing together its own experts with Professor Maurus Reinkowski, a leading scholar on MENA Affairs Europe.
About Prof. Reinkowski:
Maurus Reinkowski is Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Basel, Switzerland. From 2004 to 2008 he was teaching at University of Freiburg, Germany. In the years 2008-2010 he was Senior Fellow at Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies, School of History. Among his major publications in English are Legitimizing the Order: The Ottoman Rhetoric of State Power (2005; edited jointly with H. Karateke, Univ. of Chicago) and Helpless Imperialists. Imperial Failure, Fear and Radicalization (2012; edited jointly with Gregor Thum, Univ. of Pittsburg). His main area of research is the modern history (19th and 20th century) of the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.
